Building the King County Enrichment Lab

The King County Enrichment Lab is a way to make coding and creative media accessible to younger students. Our goal is to teach technical concepts through hands-on projects that emphasize design, storytelling, and curiosity.

Info

The program is for small after-school sessions for middle schoolers (or anyone) who have little to no coding experience. We notice that many kids were interested in technology but intimidated by syntax and theory. Instead of focusing on memorization, we approach computing as a creative tool. Students will learn by designing short animations, interactive art, and simple games that reflected their ideas. We want to empower creativity through tech.

We are a small group of high school volunteers from Sammamish. We would love to show you how to materialize your creative thoughts at the King County Library in Sammamish!

Lesson Plan

Each of our workshops will focus on one key concept for students to take back and immediately put to work. A session may be focused on moving a character, adding sounds, creating a basic background and etc. We have used web based (browser) tools for this reason, because students are able to continue to create and build beyond each classroom experience without needing additional software.

Our Mentors will provide a quick demonstration of an example and then support students through the process of experimenting with their own version. Our focus is on experimentation, learning and creativity and not perfection. If something does not work properly during the workshop we will work together to resolve the issue and discuss what went wrong.
